Episode 137: Josh Felser, Freestyle VC

Today's guest is Josh Felser, Angel investor and Co-Founder of Freestyle VC.

Josh Felser is among a growing group of successful entrepreneurs who are applying the skills they mastered in the tech space to the challenges of climate change. After getting his MBA from Duke University, he started two successful companies: Spinner (acquired by AOL Time Warner), the first internet music service, and Grouper (acquired by Sony), a video on-demand streaming service. Fresh off those successful exits, Josh pivoted into investing, co-founding Freestyle Capital, a VC firm focused on early-stage internet and mobile startups.

After reading Bill McKibben’s “Global Warming's Terrifying New Math” in Rolling Stone, Josh was motivated to tackle climate change. Co-founding, ClimateX, a company whose first product, #climate, is an app that helps users discover and share their climate change actions via social media. He aims to engage social media influencers and celebrities to amplify effective climate strategies.

In 2020, Josh began making angel investments in companies that foster a more resilient planet with a spotlight on energy management, food & water supply chain, sustainable ag and manufacturing, urban development, and disaster mitigation.

Josh also sits on the board at the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Duke University as well as a member of the Technology Solutions Group for California's COVID-19 Task Force.

Josh is an accomplished venture capitalist and entrepreneur. I was looking forward to having him on the podcast and to compare our climate journeys. We discuss his path so far, some key takeaways, and what advice he may have for others interested in making a transition to climate investing. I learned so much talking to Josh and I hope you all enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

Enjoy the show!
